The Virtual Career Fair Icon Set

The custom illustrations created for the Virtual Career Fair.

When designing the icons for the VCF, I was guided by the fact that the various user tasks and processes for each interface were relatively simple and could easily follow other conventional modes of behavior. There were many products, even inside of the Gannett network such as CareerBuilder.com, that had many of the same or similar features as VCF. This simplicity and a general lack of heavy weight content meant I could make the buttons and action items rather large and obvious. As a designer this is a rare opportunity. Normally when I am designing icons for buttons or labels, I am often forced to spend a lot of time conveying the image in a way that can be recognized at extremely small resolutions. I usually spend hours pixel scrubbing and reloading over and over until the desired level of obviousness and readability are met.

With this icon set I was given the opportunity to use larger, more detailed illustrations. I kept the colors in a simple three tone that matched the UI and brand, but used detailed vector artwork instead of pixel perfect bitmaps.
